On June 21st FMHA hosted Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets from nine Sussex County high schools. The cadets received a comprehensive tour of the Fort Miles Museum’s Artillery Park and Battery 519. The JROTC contingent was overseen by Colonel Ronald Erale from Cape Henlopen High School.
A few highlights of the Artillery Park tour are shown below:
In the first photo above, FMHA President, Dr Gary Wray provides the background on a 90mmMark2 anti-aircraft gun. This exact model gun was at Fort Miles during World War II.
In the second photo, the visiting cadets and Dr Wray pose in front of the 16-inch barrel that was one of the barrels on the USS Missouri. There were two 16-inch artillery guns located in Battery Smith at Fort Miles. These guns had a maximum range of nearly 25 miles!
Many thanks to Colonel Erale and all of the visiting cadets for a great day!
