Walk the Artillery Park to see a 16-inch gun barrel that was on board the USS Missouri the day surrender documents were signed to end World War II. Fort Miles volunteers restored the barrel and its base. It is the centerpiece of the Artillery Park., which also has on display many of the other artillery pieces that were positioned at Fort Miles, each for a specific purpose.
Tour Battery 519, which houses one-of-kind memorabilia, including a relic from the USS Arizona via the “Oil Still Bleeds” exhibit, a 12-inch gun from the USS Wyoming and an exhibit depicting the mine fields that were planted and serviced by Fort Miles personnel.
Learn about Horace Knowles, a gunner who served at Fort Miles. He defended the coast when assigned to the 261st Coast Artillery before he was shipped overseas to fight in Europe.
Climb the top of Fire Control Tower 7 to enjoy panoramic bay and ocean views. Tower 7 is one of the eleven original towers, which all remain standing along the Delaware coastline.
