On September 17th, FMHA Board Members, Bunker Buster volunteers and Docent volunteers welcomed the family of Merlin Beil to dedicate a bench in his honor at the Fort Miles Museum Artillery Park. A photo of Yvonne Beil, Merlin’s spouse for more than 60 years, and the other Beil family members in attendance captures the moment. Merlin served on the FMHA Board for over 10 years with his interest in Fort Miles dating to his active duty days while serving at Fort Miles.
In 1957, following his college graduation, Merlin enlisted in the 42nd Detachment RECAT and was assigned to a top secret operation at Fort Miles from 1957 – 1958. His RECAT unit launched remote controlled aerial target drones at Fort Miles.
FMHA fondly remembers Merlin long-standing service and volunteer efforts. A salute as well to Yvonne who often volunteered at the Fort Miles Museum Gift Shop and many events held at Fort Miles over the years. With this bench, Merlin’s presence will continue to be felt at a place he truly loved.
