The FMHA “Museum Happenings” is published monthly to keep you up-to-date on Happenings at the Fort Miles Museum. 

 

 

Holiday Shopping at Fort Miles – Saturday, December 14 

On December 14th the Fort Miles Museum Gift Shop will be open for holiday shopping from 10am – 2pm.  The Museum Gift Shop can be accessed via the main entrance to the Fort Miles Museum.  After entering Cape Henlopen State Park, follow the signs toward Fort Miles, go past the first Fort Miles parking area on your left and turn left at the entry road to the new Fort Miles parking area (white sign – blue lettering).  Follow the new entry road hop the hill and continue around to the left to the new lot.  Park at the base of the lot (fees are not currently in effect) behind the Orientation Center and walk straight ahead onto the paved walking area.  Turn right and follow the signs to the main entrance. 

The Gift Shop features hundreds of items from clothing items to toys for kids to books about Fort Miles and WWII.  Where else can you buy a gift for as low as $3.00!?  Please stop buy to say hello and purchase a gift or stocking stuffer. 

The Museum Gift Shop will be open with all merchandise offered at a 20% discount to veterans and active military personnel.

The Life of Audie Murphy – A True American Hero 

Audie Murphy grew up wanting to be a soldier.  As WWII broke out he attempted to enlist and was turned down by the Army, Navy and Marine Corps for being underweight and underage.  With his sister’s aid he miraculously aged by one year, reapplied and joined the Army in mid-1942.  Murphy served with distinction in the Italian campaign which started with a landing in Sicily in July 1943.  In 1944, he landed on Yellow Beach near Ramatuelle France and received the Distinguished Service Cross for action taken on August 15th against defending German forces.  Murphy’s courageous actions throughout the War will be discussed.  For these actions Audie Murphy received 33 US military medals, including 3 Purple Heats and the Medal of Honor.  Listen to the full story of this true American hero.

Salute to Veterans Open House and Silent Auction 

On Sunday, November 10th the Fort Miles Museum was open for free self-guided tours and hosted hundred of veterans and their families as well as area residents and visitors. 

During the event, FMHA held a silent auction of Fort Miles related prints and original sketches in the new Great Dunes Overlook events venue  Featured were works by Paul Rendel, who is internationally recognized for his paintings of USAF and other military aircraft.  Works by Delaware artists Steve Burke and Teresa Rodriquez were also featured. 

Many thanks to all who came out for the Open House and Silent Auction.  The art auction was a true success raising over $1,000, which will be used by FMHA to continue its 16-year developmental and restoration efforts Fort Miles. 

 

 

Delaware State Parks Battery 519 Tours and Lantern Tours of Fort Miles  

Winter visitors to Cape Henlopen State Park and Fort Miles wishing to see Battery 519 can do so by joining scheduled tours conducted by Delaware State Parks’ interpretative guides.  These tours are scheduled as shown below. 

Discover Battery 519 Tours 

  • December and January: Fridays and Saturdays, 11 AM and 2PM. Please note: No tours on 11/29, 11/30, 12/27 and 12/28. 

Discover Battery 519 tours are for ages 7 and up with a paying adult(s) ($5 per person). Pre-registration is required – please call 302-644-5007. 

Lantern Tours of Fort Miles are scheduled as follows: 

  • December: Saturday, December 14th at 4:30PM 
  • January: Saturday, January 18th at 5PM 

Lantern Tours are for ages 10 and older. Pre-registration is required – call 302-644-5007. Limit 30, $5 per person.
