FMHA presents the 2020 Film & Lecture Series
The three-part film/lecture series presenting the life and military heroism of Audie Murphy kicked off with a presentation by Dr. Gary Wray on January 25th. The series resumes on February 22nd with Part I of the movie “To Hell and Back.” At the opening lecture, Dr. Wray recanted the details of Murphy’s distinguished military career.
Audie Murphy grew up wanting to be a soldier. As WWII broke out, he attempted to enlist and was turned down by the Army, Navy and Marine Corps for being underweight and underage. With his sister’s aid, he miraculously aged by one year, reapplied and joined the Army in mid-1942. Murphy served with distinction in the Italian campaign which started with a landing in Sicily in July 1943. In 1944, he landed on Yellow Beach near Ramatuelle France and received the Distinguished Service Cross for action taken on August 15th against defending German forces. For his courageous actions throughout the War, Audie Murphy received 33 US military medals, including 3 Purple Heats and the Medal of Honor.
