The Art of Fort Miles Gallery featuring the works of Howard Schroeder painted while serving on the Fort Miles Mine Detail during World War II will be open to public viewing on October 27th. The Gallery is located inside Battery 519 at the Fort Miles Museum, Cape Henlopen State Park.
In the painting below, a Tech Sergeant demonstrates how to sight in an enemy vessel through an azimuth positioned in one of eleven Fire Control Towers located on the Delaware coast. These historic towers remain in existence today as do two others in Cape May NJ. Visitors to Cape Henlopen State Park can learn more about these towers by touring the Fort Miles Museum and can also climb to the top of Tower 7 located in the Park across from the Museum’s main Fort Miles parking area.
On October 27th, the Gallery will be open from 10AM – 2PM in conjunction with the Fort Miles Museum’s annual fall Open House. Tours on October 27th will be self-guided with knowledgeable FMHA docents on hand to present exhibits and answer questions. The Open House admission fee is $5 for adults and children over 7, with a $15 family rate also available.
