On September 2nd FMHA will present “In remembrance of VJ Day” at the Fort Miles Museum.
The ceremony and speakers will commence at 11AM at the “Big Gun” pad located at the top of the Museum’s Artillery Park.
The ceremony will honor Horace Knowles, who was stationed at Fort Miles with the 261st Coastal Artillery from 1940 – 1944, Jack Bolin, who was a tireless and hard working FMHA “Bunker Buster” and Robert Saupees, who was present at the surrender ceremony that took place on the USS Missouri on September 2 1945. Many will recall the Museum’s Big Gun barrel is an original barrel from the Missouri that hovered over the surrender ceremony. Sadly, each of these gentlemen passed away since the opening of the Museum’s Artillery Park on September 2 2016.
Our featured speaker on September 2nd will be Cindy Todd, Project Administrator for the Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation. Cindy has worked closely with FMHA over the years to complete a number of projects at CHSP and is currently working with FMHA to complete a new event pavilion, entrance drive and parking pad at Battery 519. Remarks will also be heard from State Representatives Steve Smyk and Ruth Briggs-King. Seating will be available, although somewhat limited.
A tour of the Museum’s feature attraction, Battery 519, will be available starting at 12 Noon following the ceremony. Prior to the tour visitors may visit the Museum’s Artillery Park, the Museum Gift Shop and the Museum’s rotating local artist gallery currently featuring the Photography of Kevin Fleming and the Aircraft Paintings of Paul Rendel. During the 12 Noon tour the “Art of Fort Miles” Gallery will be open enabling visitors to see the historic Howard Schroeder paintings of military life at Fort Miles during WWII, as well an iconic Abraxus painting of Observation Towers 3 and 4 and a portrait of General Miles painted by Mary Marshall.
