In late July, the final touches were added to the Big Gun pad located in the Fort Miles Museum Artillery Park. As shown, First State Crane lowered a “Proof Steel” onto the pad and then positioned a 16-inch shell aimed directly at the Proof Steel.
This exhibit not only demonstrates the penetrating power of a 16-inch shell, fired at, say, an enemy battleship, but also displays how a new gun barrel is tested before being placed into service.
Thanks to the Bunker Busters team led by Pat Bragdon and Dan Brown. Thanks as well to First State Crane, which donated its crane, manpower and expertise to safely install this remarkable exhibit.
