VJ Day Salute
On September 2nd, FMHA saluted Delaware’s 800 service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country during World War II. Starting in 2018, 100 names were read and saluted with the ringing of a chime. 100 names were also read this year, with six additional readings to follow each September 2nd.
These Delaware servicemen and women were honored following a presentation of the colors by an American Legion Honor Guard from Post 28 in Millsboro and remarks from Dr. Gary Wray regarding the surrender of the Japanese Imperial Empire to Allied Forces, which took place aboard the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945. The Fort Miles Artillery Park features a 16-inch artillery barrel that was the center barrel of one of the Missouri’s three turrets.
