“Project Recover”, Locating Missing Aircraft and their Airmen
Few people are aware that there are still over 82,000 U.S. service members missing in action from past conflicts since World War II – many of whom were lost in their aircraft in the ocean. In this talk, Dr. Mark Moline will share a fortuitous meeting in the western Pacific that has created a passion for the last 14 years.
The application of new technologies in the ocean has transformed our ability to locate these relatively small aircraft associated with MIAs, document the sites, and recover and return lost MIAs to their families and help provide closure that has existed for generations. The talk will track a few examples of the work being done to leave no one behind.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Mark Moline is Director of the School of Marine Science and Policy at the University of Delaware, is an Oceanographer focusing on biophysics, ecology, marine food webs, ocean optics, and remote sensing.
Dr. Moline was an early adopter of autonomous underwater technologies and a sensor developer to improve sampling of the ocean. He has worked in all 7 oceans in tropical, temperate and Polar Regions. He has written more than 120 peer reviewed articles and has been recognized with awards by NASA, U.S. Navy, and the White House.
Dr. Moline received a Fulbright through the US Department of State as a Distinguished Arctic Chair. Leveraging his background in science, ocean technology, robotic systems and an avid diver for over 40 years, Dr. Moline co-founded Project Recover in 2015 and has led teams of researchers and engineers on 30 missions across the globe to support Project Recover’s mission to locate and repatriate MIAs.
