Dozens of athletes from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington, D.C., across Delaware, and as far as South Carolina have registered to take part in the second annual Fort Miles Run/Walk Through History 5K Run Walk on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at Cape Henlopen State Park.

Proceeds from Run/Walk Through History 5K Run Walk benefit Fort Miles Museum, which is housed underground in Battery 519 and shows the daily life of the soldiers and civilians based there during World War II. Fort Miles defended the Delaware coast against enemy ships with its 32 guns, mines and searchlights in WWII.

Jim Pierce, president of Fort Miles Museum, said Cape Henlopen State Park’s natural beauty makes it a great venue for the 5K.

“This race is attracting participants from our neighboring states and as far as South Carolina. They’ll have great scenery in one of the finest parks on the East Coast,” he said. “And they’ll have a chance to experience our Fort Miles Museum and learn its history.”

Pierce added his gratitude to race partners Delaware State Parks and Races2Run and event sponsors, including those listed below.

The race begins at 9 a.m. at the fort’s Orientation Building and ends with a post-race party at The Overlook, the Fort Miles events venue with a spectacular view of the ocean. Big Oyster Brewery will host the after party, offering light food and beverages.

Registration opens at 8 a.m. and the race starts at 9 a.m.. The pre-race entry fee is $30 (until noon, Thursday, May 2), $35 the day of the event. Guest fees are $15 for the after party and $20 at the door.

Last year, about 170 people took part in the inaugural Race Through History, with eight Delaware residents finishing in the top 10.
